Today was a longer sail, about 5 hours, taking us from a quiet anchorage in Virgin Gorda to the island of Jost Van Dyke. Along the way, we passed Necker Island (Richard Branson’s island). We had strong following winds the whole way and some big seas (about 4 feet). About 10 miles offshore, we did some pretty intense man overboard drills. With nearly 30 mile and hour winds, seas large enough to toss the boat around a bit (half the kitchen equipment ended up on the floor), and a 30,000-pound boat, it was very challenging. But also a great way to build confidence!
We were all rewarded with a great time when we anchored in Long Bay near Foxy’s Taboo and hiked to the Bubbly Pool. It’s a sheltered pool with a small inlet where the waves come crashing in. The pool fills with bubbles, and the waves come in and out. And we had it all to ourselves for most of the visit. So beautiful! On the way back, we stopped in at “Foxy’s Taboo” for a quick drink, and then it was back to the boat for about 30 minutes of sailing to another bay to visit “Foxy’s” (the original) for dinner and drinks. It was the epitome of a beach bar right out of a Jimmy Buffett song. And as it happens, this was one that Jimmy Buffett frequented and often went up on stage and sang, apparently. Good food, great company, and a bit of dancing too.
A great day!
