Next Stop…Berlin

After a couple of days in Munich, we boarded a train bound for Berlin. More Christmas Markets of course, as well as great food (currywurst, yum!) and lots of World War Two and Cold War history.

We did a half-day walking tour with a guide exploring key pieces of Nazi history, which turned out to be a great experience. So much that we would have missed if we’d have just walked around seeing the sights on our own. It included Hitler’s bunker, where he committed suicide (which is now just a nondescript parking lot, an intentional choice so as to avoid creating any sort of memorial), the Gestapo’s Headquarters, the Holocaust Memorial (which was very moving), and the Brandenburg Gate.

We also explored some Cold War highlights like the Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie.

In typical fashion, Kenzie also found a couple of book stores (one that rivaled Powels here in Portland). And as she found more and more books with unique covers (apparently in Europe they have different covers than we have in the US), her face became more and more excited. I’ve now coined this as her “book face!”
